They don't know a lot of attacks, just splash, which doesn't do anything. I've heard they get better when they evolve.

Maybe they just didn't want to fight. Calling them useless might make them feel bad.

I don't think they really know the difference, but I haven't caught one so I don't know what it's like training them.

Most pokemon like to fight so I don't think that's it.
